Nicknamed the "Dubstep Ambassador of North America", Joe Nice is the resident DJ of North America's biggest dubstep monthly, "Dub War", in New York City. He is also the first North American DJ...
- to play at DMZ, the legendary bi-monthly bash in London devoted purely to dubstep
- to play at FWD at Plastic People in London (FWD is the first club night in the world devoted to dubstep, and the sound system at Plastic People was custom built to reproduce the enormous bass frequencies that are the hallmark of dubstep music)
- to play on Rinse FM, London's pre-eminent pirate radio station that is listened to by dubstep fans around the world
- to have a North American internet radio show featuring dubstep music.
Joe Nice always brings two qualities to his shows that guarantee a memorable performance. The first is that Joe Nice himself is very dynamic behind the decks, often punctuating the music with spontaneous arm movements and hand gestures, and his enthusiasm for the music is highly infectious. Secondly, because Joe Nice is one of the most renowned dubstep DJs in the world, producers from the four corners of the planet are constantly sending him their latest tracks – including a lot of unreleased material (and material, for that matter, which might never be released – a lot of producers prefer to keep some of their tracks "exclusive"). Which means Joe Nice has his hands on the very latest music in the genre of dubstep. And what this means for an audience is that there are always surprises in store because we are sure to hear tracks that we will have never heard before. Joe Nice's DJ sets are also an opportunity to discover the new directions and trends that are taking place in dubstep, which is a style of music that is constantly changing and evolving.
On the 22nd of November, Komodo Dubs is also proud to present another Montreal premiere: the first performance in Montreal by Vancouver's Michael Red, undisputedly the top dubstep producer and DJ on Canada's west coast. Red is the founding member and main player of Vancouver's "Lighta! Sound", a crew of music producers, DJs and event promoters that have put Vancouver on the map as an essential stop for internationally touring dubstep DJs. Renowned in Vancouver for his skills behind the decks, Michael Red has been exploring the world of dub music since 1998, and his DJ sets often show his appreciation for dancehall, ragga jungle, dub and reggae, along with the latest permutation of the genre, dubstep.
Also on the line-up for November 22nd are Komodo and DJ Hosta, who have been producing the Komodo Dubs nights since the beginning of 2007, and who have recently moved their series to a new venue, the [SAT]. Says Komodo, "It has made a huge difference moving Komodo Dubs to the [SAT]. To begin with, we were able to invite video artists such as Matt Williston, TIND and Pink Rubber Lady to work with us, and because the [SAT] is a center for digital arts, there is a lot of opportunity for them to be creative, which has added a lot to the artistic side of our nights. On top of that, the new sound system at the [SAT] is crazy. The detail we can hear in the music is extremely clear, which is actually incredible considering how heavy we've got the bass going in there now. Normally there's a compromise between quality of sound and pure, raw power, but in this case we're getting the best of both worlds."
Komodo, who is not your typical DJ – he does throat singing and plays didgeridoo and Turkish flute in the middle of his DJ sets – is back from playing shows in Toronto, Quebec City and Ottawa, and says he's cooking up new music for the show on November 22nd. "I don't know if it's just a reaction to the cold weather but lately I've been getting into very warm sounds – for example, I just finished a track that's based on Brazilian rhythms, and let me tell you, I can't wait to drop that tune at the next Komodo Dubs."
